Access Control Systems utilise several different types of reader technology. The selection of a particular reader or combination of readers reflects the required level of security at the entry point.
Proximity access is where an identifying device needs to be placed in the vicinity of the reader. Reader ranges vary from near contact to over a meter depending upon the potential application and the identifying devices can be made as key fobs, plastic cards, installed parts for vehicles or even implanted devices.
Radio Frequency Identification is the term often used to describe the technology behind proximity access control systems. Several communications frequencies are in common use for this purpose but the most common is still 125kHz.
